Josh Collins Kick Flip Freestyle Kayak on the New River Dries, West Virginia

Kayaking Kick-Flip the Dries

Josh Collins performs a kick-flip on the New River Dries put-in wave.

The New River Dries is a section of whitewater below the Hawk’s Nest Dam near Ansted, West Virginia. Because of water diverted by the dam for hydroelectric power, it is typically dry and not runnable in a kayak. However, when the water gets big, water spills over the dam and fill up the Dries.

In 2001 the Fayette County region recorded many inches of rainfall in a short time period. There was heavy flooding all along the New River Gorge. Laurel Creek, a tributary to the New River, was flooded and completely changed. It’s no longer runnable in its entirety in a kayak. As the large boulders and gravel were washed into the river, they created a compression wave on the river-right-hand side of the river. When the water gets really big, it becomes a world-class surf wave.

The only product I am currently offering are prints on PVC. You may not have heard of prints on PVC because they are new, but they are BEAUTIFUL! They have all the detail of a paper print without the glare of glass or additional cost of framing. They arrive ready to hang with a mount that puts the image 3/4” from the wall for a modern “floating” look. The finish is a metallic luster that I feel compliments my style.

Why not canvas? Personally, I do not like the texture that comes with a canvas print. I don't feel that they are as detailed as a PVC print and I have been unhappy with the overall printing of canvas prints that I've ordered in the past. To be fair, I have seen canvas prints that look good but I don't know where they were printed and until I find one I'm happy with, I don't want to offer them. Furthermore, canvas prints are much more expensive.

That said, if you'd still prefer a canvas or a paper print, please use the form to the right to message me and I can put together something custom for you.
